Emigration Passive Solar Twin Home

The Emigration Passive Solar Twin Home is a duplex-style residence that is designed for two working couples who want a contemporary passive solar house, close to town, with privacy and no yard work. The site is located on the north slope of Emigration Canyon. The Twin Home was constructed on the steeply sloping site so that existing vegetation was maximized, local daily winds were minimized and the magnificent canyon view was highlighted.

A "modified convection loop" was the selected passive solar system. This system allows for a south view and requires a south facing greenhouse, insulated earth storage and a double north wall. A continuous loop of the space transmits heat to the earth storage below. Unlike other "convective loop" houses which incorporate sloped glazing into the south wall, this house performs with only vertical south glass. The vertical glass allows for up to 30% additional winter heat gain due to snow reflection.

The Twin Home was awarded AIA Utah's 25 Year Award.
