As the centerpiece of Salt Lake City's Gateway District Land Use & Development Masterplan, The Gateway is the first phase of a multi-year commitment to develop 30 acres in the urban core. The District Masterplan calls for 10,000 new residential units, cultural facilities, retail, as well as the City's major transportation hub for bus, light rail, commuter rail, and Amtrak by the year 2005.
GSBS worked with Jerde Partnership International on early schematic design and assumed responsibility for the architecture of Block A of The Gateway (approximately one-third of the retail portion of the project). GSBS’s scope included all of the site development, landscape architecture, and renovation of the historic Union Pacific Depot.
GSBS designed 200,000 square feet of core and shell retail space for a 12- screen multiplex theater, a large-format theater, planetarium, restaurants, nightclubs, and retail stores. GSBS designed tenant improvement for a number of retail stores, including Bill Loya, Humphry Yogart, Tony Hawk, and Quicksilver.
The design team completely renovated the Union Pacific Depot and which serves as the project’s grand entrance. The Depot fronts the GSBS-designed Olympic Legacy plaza—lined with cafes and shops—which has become one of the city’s hottest new gathering places. |
