The West Jordan Court Facility is a 3 story, 12 courtroom building that will replace the existing Sandy City facility and provide court service in the south-western portion of the Salt Lake valley. The courtroom deployment is split equally between district juvenile court uses, with each courtroom floor of the new facility dedicated to a particular court.
The design of the West Jordan facility is based on the prototypical building developed for the recently completed First District Courthouse in Logan, Utah. The design team was directed to modify the exterior appearance of the prototype to provide a more judicial aesthetic, subject to the review of the Utah State Judicial Council. Certain other aspects of the prototype have also been modified to meet the specific programmatic and functional needs of this court’s operation.
Of the twelve courtrooms, nine will be fitted out for use at the facility’s opening with the remaining three brought on line as demand requires. The facility is also designed with the anticipation of an addition that will expand the building to 16 courtrooms.
Like most modern court facilities, the organizing principal of this design is the layering of the public and private court functions on opposite sides of the courtrooms. Secure inmate holding is located between pairs of courtrooms and accessed from a secure zone between the two courtroom floors. The result is the proper segregation of the facility users to achieve a safe and secure building where the judicial proceedings are not compromised. |
