KENNECOTT UTAH COPPER CO. has been awarded a LEED Silver Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council for the Kennecott Mine Administration building. Kennecott used recycled materials, increased the use of daylight and reduced water and energy consumption. Architect Garth Shaw, of GSBS Architects, describes the use of the sun shade, above right, on the outside of the window that reduces heat and glare on the windows to optimize energy efficiency. The light shelf on the inside of the glass optimizes daylight by reflecting light farther into the interior, thus reducing the use of electricity.
